Most people regard schizophrenia as a disease they'd rather not have in the family. It is, in fact, more likely to be not only part of the human condition but an important part. One interpretation of the evidence available is that the genes concerned were involved in the dynamics of hominid life several hundred thousand years ago and are responsible for the inclusion of psychotic genes in the modern human genome. We all have psychotic genes, some more than others - too many causes psychiatric problems - the tolerable maximum results in creativity and the average amount gives the occasional auditory or visual hallucination.
